Since moving to Flagstaff J and I have struggled with finding a church and letting go of our seriously awesome church in San Clemente. We've tried all the different nondenominational churches in town and we've basically settled on our best option. Does it fell like the one? No. Not even close. But it does feel like our best option. Now our old church had a pretty rad small group set up that allowed us to have a guided Bible study every week. I absolutely loved it. We did a young marrieds group and met the sweetest couples. My best friend and her husband were in the group too and it was a high light of my week. Our new church doesn't really have the same type of set up. Which has seriously bummed me out. Like a lot. Lately i've been thinking that maybe this challenge is really a good thing. For the first time i'm forced to do some Bible studies solo. I decided to start from the beginning of the Bible and just go book by book. Which is super exciting. I haven't read the Bible cover to cover since I was 16.

Now after deciding to give this bible study by book thing I went straight to pinterest and looked it up. And there are NO blog posts that has a list of all of these. Which is crazy to me! So I'm going to start from scratch and make my own!

Do you have any book specific Bible studies that you absolutely love? I'm going to take the next week researching Genesis Bible studies. Fingers crossed I find a good one!

Sometimes with my prayer journal I just pick a verse and doodle. And as I color and draw in the verse I really meditate on its meaning or what it means to me in that moment. That has been one of the most wonderful parts of having a prayer journal for me, just simply being able to focus on what I'm going through at different points in my life. It's less confining than a traditional devotional. And personally I find it more rewarding.

Recently I've been struggling with so many things in life. From the loss of a loved one to job changes and car frustrations it's been a totally shitty year. In this difficult season I've found myself questioning my faith over and over again. Which is frankly just plain uncomfortable. This week I was not feeling like doing my journal at all. For inspiration I opened up my pinterest Jesus board and just picked one that spoke to me. After reading the verse and doodling I went into my bible app and read the chapter. And afterwards I felt as though it was the perfect chapter for me to read. For weeks I had been questioning why for so many different things. This verse reminds me that I just don't need to know the whys of everything at the exact moment that I want to know them. That's the purpose of faith and trusting in God. And instead of letting go of control and trusting in my faith I was holding hard onto the control I thought I had. I don't know why I have such a need to control my life and environment. Unfortunately that need is my biggest challenge in my walk with Jesus. This week was such a good reminder in the power of prayer and the importance of spending a little bit of time everyday digging into my bible and getting closer to God.  After praying about my seriously wounded heart I feel slightly better. I'm not going to lie and say I prayed and now everything is perfect. Prayer doesn't do that. But I do feel more at peace with the loss of my dear Papa and more grounded in terms of all the other craziness going on in my life right now. Hopefully I wont need a reminder again anytime soon.

Jesus replied, "you don't understand what I'm doing now, but someday you will."  -John 13:7

Word / 2

In my last word post I was really dedicating myself to get back on track in my walk with the Lord. In the last few weeks i've started attending a Bible study that follows along with the weekly sermons at our church. And I've slowly started doing my daily quiet time that's either working on my prayer journal or simply reading the Bible. I tried doing a structured plan but it just did not work for me. Possibly this summer when my work schedule is less hectic but for now i'm really enjoying my simple daily moments to stop, slow down and focus on Christ. Progress people! I'm pretty happy about it. And I'm very excited to see how that quiet time is going to evolve over the next few months.

Recently my pastor gave  a sermon on the barriers keeping us from our walk with Christ.  The examples he used were pretty basic. Worldly desires, Greed, Rage. Nothing new. And the sermon was actually very similar to one i'd heard before as a teenager. He used a parable from Mark 4:1-34 and it's a very straight forward message. But what I love about his take is that as christians we still have barriers to break down. That it doesn't matter if you're already saved, you still should actively search and faithfully work on your heart.
For me the message hit close to home and I felt like it was precisely what I needed to hear that day, in that moment of my life.  But, even though I thought it was an awesome sermon I found it difficult to pinpoint my barriers. The "thorns" in my heart that keep me from reaching my goals. Then my Bible study leader challenged me to dig deep and really meditate on the biggest barrier for me personally. To be honest I struggled with this. I could tell you a hundred things that are getting in the way of my walk, but finding a root cause of these barriers was super challenging. Like i'm a workaholic, perfectionist, I never take time for myself because I'm too focused on everything else. But finding the why was hard. Why am I compelled to work too much? What is driving me to strive for constant perfection. What is the root cause of my thorn?
After seriously struggling for days after my Bible study meeting it finally clicked.  My leader suggested that I search Bible verses and find one verse that resonated with my specific barrier. Since I couldn't figure out what my barrier was I meditated on verses that seemed close. While searching for verses on feeling overwhelmed, I came across Romans 5:8 in a pinterest board and it just clicked. My barrier is self worth. I feel the constant need to prove myself. Prove that I'm good enough. That i'm worthy. Not just of Christ but of everything in my life. The actual verse is While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  How great is God that he sent his one and only son to die on the cross for the unworthy? Because that's the thing, not one of us deserves his love. Not one of us earned it. Jesus paid a debt he did not owe. To be Christian is not to be perfect. It's not to earn your salvation. It's not to be worthy. It's to be broken, unworthy, and still redeemed. That is God's grace.
Why then am I constantly struggling to be worthy? To be perfect? It's not only self harming but it's keeping me from Christ.
Discovering my barrier was a cool break through. But breaking down that barrier is not going to be easy. I wrote out "I loved you at your darkest" and put it on my wall so it's one of the first things I see when I wake up. Hopefully the reminder will help me slow down and focus on that truth every time I get ahead of myself. One day at a time. But i'm excited for progress.

Word / 1

Lately I've really felt myself neglecting my relationship with Christ. I could make one thousand and one excuses (moving away from the best church ever was tough for sure), but if I was honest with myself I'm really just not taking the time to focus on the important things. Which is so not okay. And I can feel myself losing my happy. In September I had the BEST TRIP back to San Clemente to shower my favorite soon to be mom and to get some quality best friend time in. During my visit I was reminded of some of my old habits that added so much to my life. And now I finally feel motivated to make some serious changes. Moving to Flagstaff has been such a blessing and I do not regret our decision to move one bit. However, I think part of me is still mourning some of the amazing things that made SC our home. I miss living next door to my person. I miss our church. I miss walking my dogs on the beach trail and lazy days in Laguna. I miss the food; bagels, tacos, and pizza are not the same in Flag. Unfortunately I've been focusing too much on the things I miss about our old home and not enough time or energy on falling in love with new things here. That ends now.
First step is dedicating a small part of everyday to reading my bible and starting a prayer journal. I have never had a prayer journal before. (inspiration below)

Pinterest has been throwing some awesome ones into my feed and i'm super inspired by the idea. For now i'm searching for the perfect journal with not too thin paper and looking for a good bible study to follow along. Anyone have a good bible study that they follow? If so i'm all ears. I'm sure i'll post updates soon!
